“Leadership is about empowering others to see the big picture, connect the dots, and drive meaningful change. In fast-evolving industries like Life Sciences, Healthcare, and Digital, adaptability and collaboration are critical to success.”
Ajay Dixit, President – Life Sciences, Healthcare & Digital Experience, Americas
For this Q&A, I spoke with Ajay Dixit about his leadership style and how he keeps his team motivated to deliver excellence.
Sharon: Ajay, thank you for your time. Let’s start with the fundamentals, tell us about your role.
Ajay: As the Head of Life Sciences, Healthcare, and Digital Interactive, my role is to drive strategic growth and innovation across these dynamic sectors. I oversee the development and execution of business strategies, ensuring we deliver solutions that address the evolving needs of our clients.
I focus on collaboration across teams, leveraging digital transformation, and staying ahead of industry trends to create value for our stakeholders. It’s a role that combines leadership, vision, and a passion for making a meaningful impact in these industries.
Sharon: That’s a broad and impactful scope. Let’s dive deeper into your approach, what’s your leadership philosophy?
Ajay: My leadership centers around empowerment, collaboration, and adaptability. I believe in creating an environment where teams feel seen, take charge of ownership, innovate freely, and bring their best ideas forward. Collaboration is key, breaking down barriers and building cross-functional teams leads to develop richer solutions and stronger outcomes. Lastly, in industries that evolve rapidly, adaptability is essential.
I encourage my teams to embrace change, stay curious, and continuously learn to stay ahead of the curve. My goal is to inspire and enable others to reach their full potential while driving collective success.
Sharon: I can see how a culture of collaboration and adaptability is essential to keep up with the pace of change. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced, and how did you overcome it?
Ajay: Over the past three decades, our industry has undergone rapid transformation, from Y2K to the dot-com boom, the rise of digital, and now the broad application of AI. Through it all, I’ve learned that change is the only constant, continuous learning, and adaptability are keys to success.
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced recently was managing simultaneous shifts in the market and within our organization. The pace of change was intense, leading to lower energy levels among both the team and our customers.
To address this, I focused on clear communication, stakeholder engagement, and incremental progress. I worked closely with teams to understand their concerns, provided the necessary resources to build confidence, and celebrated small wins to create momentum. By mindfully building a culture of collaboration, continuous learning, and resilience, we successfully navigated the turbulence, integrated innovative digital solutions, and delivered measurable results that strengthened our position in the market.
Sharon: That’s a great example of leading through change. How do you approach developing future leaders within your team?
Ajay: My strategy for developing future leaders is based on empowerment, mentorship, and hands-on growth opportunities. I believe in identifying high-potential individuals early and providing them with assignments that stretch their capabilities.
Mentorship is a huge part of this. I encourage open dialogue, share insights from my own experiences, and provide constructive feedback to help them grow. Strong leadership requires seeing the big picture, gathering diverse perspectives, connecting the dots, and communicating clearly. These are essential for driving transformation and realizing value quickly.
Sharon: Developing leaders through real-world challenges and mentorship is an effective approach. What about your own professional development, how do you manage it?
Ajay: I take a continuous learning and self-reflective approach to my development. I actively seek opportunities to expand my knowledge, whether through industry conferences, executive education programs, or staying current on the latest Life Sciences, Healthcare, and Digital innovation trends. I also prioritize feedback from peers, mentors, and team members, as it provides valuable insights into areas where I can grow.
There’s a saying that resonates deeply with me:
“Ships don’t sink because of the water around them; they sink because of the water that gets in them. Don’t let what’s happening around you weigh you down.”
I try to keep this idea in mind, doing my best to maintain focus and build my resilience no matter the external pressures.
Sharon: That’s a strong perspective on resilience. From your experience, what is the most important leadership skill?
Ajay: I believe the most important skills a leader should possess are empathy, accountability, and the ability to build trust.
Empathy allows leaders to understand and connect with their teams on a human level, resulting in a culture of inclusivity and support. Accountability ensures that leaders take ownership of decisions and outcomes, setting a strong example for their teams. Finally, trust is the foundation of any successful team—it’s built through transparency, consistency, and delivering on commitments. Together, these skills create a leadership style that inspires confidence, strengthens collaboration, and drives meaningful results.
Summary
